Tu’Bishvat 2026
Our community celebrated the New year for trees, Tu’Bishvat with chocolate & challah trees. I thought the chocolate one would be easy, it was, just took a lot longer to put together than expected. It was left in the fridge overnight and was perfect by the next day. I was not overly impressed with my Challah tree, it’s a learning curve. Hopefully next year’s tree will be a bit better. We had the mandatory fruit platter and biscuits representing wheat. Overall a fairly successful day.

Holocaust Memorial 2026
On Saturday 24th January 2026, Brentwood Reform (A.K.A Tikvah Chadasha)came together with Christian Friends of Israel, to hold a service commemorating the WW2 Holocaust. Six million Jews, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, were murdered by the Nazis. Prior to WW2, the world Jewish population was around 16.6 million people. Between 1933 and 1945, Nazi Germany & its collaborators murdered a little over a third of the world’s Jews. Sadly, today the Jewish population has not yet recovered from this devastating loss, 80 years on and the world Jewish population is around 15.7 million, we still have some way to go to reach pre WW2 numbers. Yet what a miracle that having lost a…

Lights, Laughter & Latkes: Our Hanukkah Celebration
On Saturday 21st December, our community came together to celebrate Chanukah with a joyful and lively shul party, filled with light, creativity, and togetherness. Families, children, and members of all ages gathered to mark the festival, lighting the chanukiyot and sharing in the warmth of the occasion. The hall was buzzing with activity as children (and adults!) got stuck into Chanukah-themed crafts, colouring, games, and plenty of delicious treats. Laughter, conversation, and candlelight filled the room, creating a truly festive atmosphere. It was especially lovely to see so many generations celebrating together; from the youngest members proudly showing off their artwork to long-standing community members enjoying the celebrations and catching…

Mazel Tov Shlomo ben Avraham
Around 18 months ago, we were contacted by George who had been thinking about conversion to Judaism for some time. George has family living in Israel and has visited Israel many times. George’s wife though not Jewish both she and George are strong supporters of Israel, Kate was for a number of years a teacher at a Sunday Cheder class. Thus she is familiar both with Hebrew, Jewish traditions and of course the food and songs that partner Judaism. Kate has fully supported George in his journey and is very proud of the move he has made. So after around 18 months of study, which included learning about Judaism and learning Hebrew, George appeared at the…

Simchat Torah 2025
This year on Simchat Torah we honoured our Kallah Bereshit Suzanne and Chatan Torah Beri. There was much singing and dancing as our members took turns dancing with the Sefer Torah to music provided by Jennifer. Jennifer cleverly projected the lyrics of the songs onto the wall. Unfortunately, some of the children were a bit reluctant to stand for the traditional blessing under the tallit held by our Kallah and Chatan. The children were however happy to dance with the tiny scroll we keep specifically so the younger children can be included. The small sefer Torah is, whilst only 32cm high, is a full, printed version of the Sifri Torah complete with its…

They Shall Beat Their Swords into Ploughshares
We Jews have just come to the end of an extended sequence of religious festivals following upon our New Year. But, as you can imagine, this year’s celebrations have been very muted. A deep, dark shadow has fallen across our lives. Two weeks ago was Yom Kippur, when our synagogues are packed full for the annual fast, when we pray to God to forgive us for our sins. But this year, we were sinned against, as a knife-wielding fanatic tried to gain entrance to a packed synagogue in north Manchester. Two ordinary worshippers were murdered. It could have been many more. Then, on 7th October, we again gathered in our synagogues for the late harvest festival of Sukkot and also commemorated the second…

Meeting the HHD’s Rabbi
In our tradition, any excuse for a full kiddish is a good one. Soon Shabbat 14th June, we got together to socialize. Around a table of food we chatted and met the Rabbi who will be leading our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Delicious food as always supplied by Debra Kaye, a lovely time was had by all.

Celebrating Shavout 2025
On Erev Shavout members of Brentwood Reform gathered together in the sunshine to celebrate the festival of Shavout. Natasha led a short service, beginning with the community reciting the Shechinah together. We listened to Natasha recite the story of Naiomi and Ruth. The two Challot required for Shavout , were made as Sheafs of wheat. This was to represent the story of Ruth gleaning wheat from the fields of Boaz. Jan made Cheesy Challah, a first for us. We then enjoyed a substantial Kiddish of Cheese and fruit Blintzes, Cheesy Challah rolls and bagels and of course being Shavout, the obligatory cheesecake. All in all, a beautiful day and service. It was a joy to watch people eating and drinking whilst the children played in the…
